Inspiration Verger de Soulas Speculum Theologie (Bibliotheque nationale de France- MS fr.9220) late 13th c. Calligraphic hand on original appears a form of chancery style, version therefore imitated herein. Wording language inspired by charter of Grand Duchy of Lithuania giving Magdeburg Law to Brest, 1387.
Materials: Period pigments, gum arabic on Parchment. Gesso and gold leaf, Walnut gall ink mixed with black for dark.
Focus being:
1) Portrait of main recipient – attempt realistic representation, but keep in style for period closely
2) Remaining portrait images keep to period style, maintain image consistency with original
3) Gilding- practice with gesso, working on layering, get appropriate smoothness and flow.
4) Mirror calligraphic style close as possible
Much effort into practice on faces and layout. Little critters bottom taking focus and effort. Several practice pages of calligraphy needed, flow and consistency difficult with hand on non-straight lines. Diapering adding matching shapes.
Text is:
Upon this sixteenth of June, AS LII, We make Our voices heard, being desirous of recognizing the noble condition of our – LEO DIETRICH – that We give royal testament unto the great gifts of self he has given to Us and thus to all of Aethelmearc. We see the quiet grace he shows in all things, at all times, wherever he goes. It is with Our Will and Law that he be henceforth seen as a Baron of Our Court to be afforded all rights, privileges and honor thereto. So declare We, Timothy and Gabrielle, King and Queen Aethelmearc.
