Kolia's adventures in medieval scribal arts

About

Nikolai Vasiliev is a 15th Century Kievan Rus artisan, currently in residence under the patronage of Duke Malcolm MacEoghainn in the SCA kingdom of Aethelmearc. He is a student of medieval illumination and calligraphy with no determined focus of style, enjoying – in his words – “learning all new things with challenge,” although he does admit to a preference of avoiding Celtic, math not being his strong suit.

He has been working in the scribal arts since sometime around AS XX, getting his first taste of the art in the Barony of Black Diamond, Kingdom of Atlantia. Now he quietly takes the commissions given to him by his patron, stretching his skills into the materials and techniques employed in period. He works both in the illumination and calligraphy aspects of a scroll, with a constant effort to match the two aspects as close as possible to a given exemplar.

At this point, he is maintaining his focus on his patron’s assignments, taking work in a rationed schedule to continue stretching his skills while maintaining a level of expected quality. He does give individual guided lessons, most often around calligraphy and the deconstruction of a given hand into individual components.

He can be reached through his Patron, though he does maintain a limited facebook presence himself.
